Chapter 30: Roommates

Rebecca moved into Nico’s condo two weeks later, one week before the wedding. He offered to pay for a moving company, but she’d laughed. “Everything I own I can fit into a few suitcases,” she said ruefully. “I have clothes and toiletries, my laptop, some books, and a few other odds and ends.”

“Oh,” he said, embarrassed. He hadn’t meant to dredge up memories of losing her possessions after she’d had to downsize from an apartment to a single room. “Right.”

He insisted on driving over to her place with his 4Runner and loading her suitcases into the SUV.

Rebecca hugged Mrs. Tiedeman as they said goodbye. “I’ll see you at the wedding next weekend, and we’ll definitely keep in touch,” she promised.

“Good luck, dearie,” Mrs. T said, hugging her back. She glanced at Nico, waiting in the car, and whispered in Rebecca’s ear, “He’s crazy about you, I can tell. Things will work out for the best.”

Rebecca smiled tremulously. “I hope so.”
