Chapter 13: First Aid

"The first aid stuff is in my bathroom cabinet," Abel said, beckoning Luke to follow him to his room.

Luke started after him a beat late, gawking at Damon as if he expected him to vanish. His legs went wobbly, his heart rate accelerated, and his head whirred with deafening sirens. There was no misidentifying the man in the living room: he looked older than Abel, the right age for the boy in the photo. He had the black hair, the light eyes, the unmistakable scar, a thick, jagged patch above his eyebrow.

Luke was confounded.

Abel listened to him say that he was hunting the half-vampire, and still invited Luke into his home with him.

A prickle of ice slid down Luke's spine. Abel didn't give him any reason to think he was in danger, but suddenly he felt very aware that he stood in a small bathroom alone with Luke. No one knew he was here. No one would know where to look for him if Abel decided to get rid of him before he could sell out his brother.
