Chapter 15: Too Late

"What'd he want?"

Luke flinched, startled by Rob's abrupt question as soon as he opened the door. He didn't look at Rob, just locked the door and headed to his room. "The Herald wanted to talk to me about something."

"Oh, about your special little mission?"

Luke stopped in his tracks. "How did—?"

"What, did you think it was a secret?" Rob scoffed. "The Herald told us during service. You'd know if you ever showed up."

A bucket of cold nerves poured over Luke. He didn't know why he expected the assignment to stay between him and the Herald; there were no secrets in The Faith, neither quiet triumphs nor hidden mistakes. He was sure that the congregation heard of him letting the vampire get away at the hunt, and he could picture Rob standing at the Doyen's podium and repenting his aggression towards Luke through gritted teeth in front of everyone's disapproving faces. There was no true escape of The Faith's watchful eye, only avoidance by not going to service.
