"Can we stop at the corner store real quick?" Abel asked as they turned down the street with a familiar drugstore. "I need to pick up some drinks and stuff."
"Yeah, sure," Luke said, though he felt a little nervous to go back into the store after his bite incident. He hoped that the owner didn't remember him.
Abel held the door open for him and Luke thanked him as he walked in.
"Hey, it's you!" the owner said from behind the counter with a jovial smile. "Come here for a moment, boy!"
Luke looked at the owner with an embarrassed smile. He approached him with both hands around his coffee cup for safety.
"Are you doing okay?" the owner asked, smiling with crinkly skin.
Luke nodded. "I was fine the next day after the bite," he said, forcing his eyes not to avert sideways to the portrait of his father.
"You really gave those brothers a fright," he said with a chuckle.
Luke smiled weakly. "Yeah, I'm glad they were around to help."
