Chapter 41: Liar

Luke dropped Abel's hand when the church's steeple came into view over the rooftops, and he said goodbye to him a block away from his street. He walked back home trying to stifle a smile from his lips, but it was impossible.

He avoided eye contact with anyone on the sidewalk and dread rose in him as he turned towards his apartment complex.

Luke jumped out of his skin when he saw someone standing at the foot of the staircase.

"Come with me," Herald Thomas said, turning on his heel and walking towards his cottage.

Luke considered a thousand things at that moment; the loudest, most panicked screeches told him to run.

But, he didn't. He followed behind the Herald, coming up with so many hasty alibis that his mind jumbled into indiscernible noise.

As soon as the cottage door opened, cold, slimy dread trickled into Luke. John, Dillon, and Rob were all inside, sitting at the dining table.

"Sit," Herald Thomas commanded, gesturing to the last empty seat at the table.
