Chapter 42: Jealousy

The trio walked out of the church equipped with wooden stakes and zip-tie restraints, and Luke sped up to catch them before they could go.

Rob saw Luke approaching and broke off from the other two to confront Luke.

Luke's chest burned, he had a stitch in his side, and his insides rushed with a horrible mix of adrenaline and dread. He skidded to a step as he neared Rob, watching John and Dillon get into the van. "Rob, listen to me, you can't—"

Rob reared back and swung the blunt of a stake at Luke's head.

Luke was too shocked to react in time, and white-hot pain seared through his skull. He stumbled back and looked at him with pure incredulity.

"I saw you with that guy," Rob said, his face red and puffed with his loathing. "I know that you and him are—You're—" He spat onto the grass beside him.

Luke's hands balled into fists at his sides, his cheek throbbing from the Herald's slap and now his head from the stake. Thinking clearly was impossible.
