Chapter 42: Detente I

Amelia's horse sped ahead and she grinned as the wind whipped her hair. Riding with her brother, with his guards trailing a ways behind, was a treat she was going to make the most of. Damon insisted she bring her possessions in a travel pack rather than her basket, which he had then carried for her. The two books she had found on herbs, a leg of venison, and her purchases from yesterday were clearly weighing him down - either that or he was letting her win the race back to her cottage.

She turned the corner and her home came into view, but she pulled up short as she saw a familiar figure waiting outside.

Damon joined her a moment later, and leaned over to speak. 'Your problem from yesterday?'

Sighing, Amelia nodded.

'Would you like me to deal with him?' he asked.

Pushing him away, she said, 'When did I ever need you to fight my battles?'

'Jean, when he kept trying to kiss you.'
