Chapter 28: Battle at the Border

“No!”

Rain screamed as she rushed forward without any thought. She ran for the boy and quickly dove to cover his little body with her own.

Screams rang in the air as the pillar crashed into where the two were standing.

Rain grunted from the pain, curling around Ronan as the pillar collided with her back. Her breath knocked out of her but she thought she was fine for the most part as Ronan cried underneath her.

She pulled herself and Ronan out from under the collapsing house, debris coating them with dust and wood.

Ronan coughed between his sobs, smoke filling the air. Rain covered his little mouth.

Hands pulled on her free arm, and she clasped them tightly, eyes shut as she held onto Ronan with one arm. They pulled her free from the pillar and as she tried to get to her feet, setting Ronan on his own, that’s when the pain came.

Rain gasped as it felt like someone had peeled off her skin, the pain so overwhelming she fell to one knee, shaking.
