Chapter 30: Vigil

For every loss, there is an emptiness that accompanies it. Like a pair of flirting lovers, the two somehow always meet back at the place they begin. They are entwined like Fate and Coincidence in an empty bar.

Death never forgives and it never forgets. For every tick of a clock, he grows stronger.

Some get more time than others. The waste of a single minute is an unforgivable sin in his eyes.

They are accompanied by his icy gaze as they parade through the forest. One foot at a time, the weight of his burden bearing down on their shoulders like Atlas and the world.

There is no second chance once you meet his eyes.

Rain knows this all too well.

And that’s why she follows, one foot after the other as the shifters carry their fallen brethren on their shoulders.

The cold mist follows where the rain has ended. The time for tears has passed. It leaves the silence in its midst.
