Chapter 31: Deja Vu

Awareness finds her as easily as it ever does. The ceiling is white as her eyes flutter open to reality. A warm hand grips hers beneath the scratchy blanket covering her body.

As she sits up, she grimaces at the flare of pain from her back. She ignores it, instead, her focus falls to the figure beside her.

In a plastic, uncomfortable-looking chair pulled as far as it could go to her besides, sat Orion. He lay sleeping, eyes closed, hand gripping hers tightly. As she moves, her hand pulls on his, but he doesn’t wake.

Exhaustion colors his features. His hair swept back from his face, dark circles taking their place under his eyes. He's worn and weary and she knows instinctively that he hasn't left her side.

Instead of warming her cold heart, guilt wraps it like a snake coiling around its prey.

Lucas is dead.

And the fault lies at her feet.

The doctor opens with a click amid her thoughts and Rain sits up straighter to meet the eyes of Dr. Lewis.
