"Legacy inheritors, if you don't tell me just who you are, we're gonna have a bad time!" Jiji huffed as she put her legs on the table and leaned back.
Alex and Caron were sitting right next to each other on the other side of the table, sweating bullets.
"…"
"…"
'Can someone please walk in right now?! Help!!!' Both of them were thinking.
How did they get into this situation? Well, let us go back to the day before.
[(Yesterday)]
The sun was setting, soon it would become dangerously dark, but even so the group continued to their destination. It's said that people are not scared of the dark itself, but are scared of what they can not see in the dark, scared of what could be lurking in the darkness. And, it could also be said that Alex is feeling the same way.
When she was young, she had this horrible fear of the darkness. She would avoid dark places like the plague. But after she grew a little older, her fear of the dark lessened. At the most, she would be scared if she was in a dark place alone. Other than that, she didn't think too much when she was in a dark place.
Now that she knows the existence of monsters, and how dangerous they are. Her fear of the dark, of which should have only troubled her during her childhood, has now come back to haunt her.
Maybe it's not the fact that it's becoming darker outside, but more that she herself is currently outside… along with the monsters…
'It's fine, everything's ok. Josh and Ana are here to protect us. And Jiji is also following behind. Nothing bad…will happen, r-right?'
After it became hard to see, Josh used magic to cast a dim lantern. It was dangerous to do such things but, well… she knew the reason.
'It's because of us.'
She overheard the conversation Josh and Ana had before.
"It's getting dark." Josh looked at the sun, which had hid itself behind a building.
"Meh, it's fine." Ana shrugged.
"But what about the four behind us?" Josh glanced behind himself.
"Jiji and that Vati guy can deal with it. Our job is to take care of survivors, not aliens." Ana brushed it off.
"Alex and Caron are normal people though." He nudged Ana's shoulder.
"…" She forgot.
Josh shook is head and sighed, he brought up his hand and a ball of light appeared.
"Ms. Ana, it's a bit dangerous but if they can't see, they might get lost."
Ana nodded, and they continued to walk in silence.
Hearing this, Alex felt extremely guilty. She had seen people who would drag others down, whether on purpose or by mistake. And now she was one of those deadweights.
'Chris said I would become stronger after obtaining the Legacy, but nothing has happened…'
Everything that happened before was so unbelievable, but it was real. Yet now she felt like she had been lied to.
'Well, it'd be ridiculous if I became strong so easily, but still…'
It wasn't a good feeling knowing that you were useless, especially when people risked themselves to help you.
She didn't know how long they had walked for, it felt like forever. She also found it strange that they had not encounter a single monster.
Alex thought that the streets would be swarming with monsters left and right, but it was much more quiet than she expected.
'I guess that's good thing?' It was better this way anyways.
She looked at Josh and Ana who were up front, they seemed to find this situation normal. Maybe they know why?
She saw them come to a stop, so she also stopped walking. Curiously, she poked her head out to see what they were looking at.
They seemed to be in front of an apartment building. Ana opened the door but didn't walk in yet, she looked behind at Alex, and moved to the side.
Josh also moved to the side, leaving the door to the apartment complex wide open.
Alex looked at Caron, then Josh and Ana, then at the door.
"Do we just go in?" She pointed at the pitch darkness behind the open door.
"Yeah, we'll go in last." Ana nodded.
Alex simply did what they asked and went through the door. It was dark.
Caron, Jiji, and Vati also followed behind. Finally, Josh and Ana stepped inside and closed the door.
A bright light suddenly appeared in the dark room, blinding everyone. Josh and Ana seemed to be used to it, as they simply squinted their eyes slightly.
*Beep!*
Alex found herself standing in an empty room. Everyone else was also there with her.
"Haa, yes! We're back baby!" Ana jumped in joy as she fist pumped in the air.
Was this the safe place they were talking about?
But before Alex could even process the situation, a young man walked in. He looked to be in his 20s, and had a grin plastered on his face.
"HAHAHA!!" He laughed loudly.
Ana also laughed out loud, "HAHAHA!!!"
It was a weird exchange of laughter, and it only confused Alex more.
Josh coughed awkwardly, trying to get the attention of the two laughing manics.
"Ahem!"
The two stopped laughing, noticing Josh's discomfort.
"We have guests."
The man tilted his head to the side, and took a look at the people behind them.
He smiled seeing Alex and Caron.
But his smile stiffened when he saw the other two behind them.
Jiji and Vati…
His face turned serious as he stood up straight and looked at Josh and Ana for answers. Josh smiled awkwardly, and Ana simply shrugged.
He sighed deeply, as if not caring whether Jiji or Vati noticed, and beckoned the group to follow him out.
"Mia, take the two kids to a room and give em something to eat." He said without even looking in her direction.
The woman simply nodded, and brought the siblings away.
Jiji looked in the direction that Alex and Caron went, as if knowing her concerns, the man spoke.
"You'll come with me, we have some things to talk about. And don't worry, I'm not going to do anything, we're going to do this by talking civilly."
She hesitantly nodded her head, and followed the man, her servant next to her. Ana and Josh trailed behind her.
Alex and Caron were brought to a room with two beds on each side, and a night stand to accompany them.
"You will stay here for now, I will bring you some food and drinks. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate. As long as it is within my authority and abilities, I will try my best to answer them." Mia led them into the room.
Caron spoke, "Who was that guy?"
Mia responded immediately, "His name is Donma, he's the captain and overseer of Base 3."
Caron nodded and didn't say anything more, Alex also was silent.
With nothing else to do, Mia left the room, closing the door behind her.
Nothing really interesting happened in that time, after a while Mia came back with food and water. The two ate a lot, and then slept like the dead afterwards.
A lot had happened the past 3 days, everything that happened just felt so surreal.
Alex looked at the ceiling blankly. She was in a nice room, laying in a nice bed, surrounded by nice people. She thought that after her mother died she would be alone, having to struggle to take care of her brother, while also avoiding monsters.
Alex felt something wet on her face, she lifted her hand and touched her cheek, she was crying.
'I'm so glad to be alive.'
