Chapter 49: Leave It All Behind

Hallie’s POV

Plaything? Who could his father be referring too?

I pull my knees tight to my chest as I cradle myself, watching River as his body stiffens and his hands clench into balls at his side. I take several deep calming breaths because it feels as though my heart is going to burst out of my chest at any second.

My eyes widen when I hear a ‘whoosh’ of air rush past my ears, and the next thing I know I’m being pulled to my feet with a strong arm wrapped tightly around my neck, pushing hard on my throat.

The breath trying to leave my throat hitches as the small airway constricts and my eyes feel as though they’re about to pop out of my head with the pressure. Everything happens so fast that I only have time to see River spin on his heels and a look of anger consumes his features as his eyes darken.
