Chapter 34: Elementals

Here I am back where all of this started, in the tent of a goddess I have worshiped since I was old enough to go to my knees in prayer. She offers me a chair, offers me a drink, offers me comfort and all I can think of is why me? Why me? I'm not the smartest like Chrissy who hides the way that she scribbles weird sums and words on the back of her hand and then washes them off again. I'm not the strongest and boldest like Isabel, I'm not the kindest like Sam and I'm not the youngest and bravest like Mitch.

I'm just Ella. Too tall, too interested in the wrong things, too much of a problem.

"Because you are unique," she says, answering the question I haven't asked. The mist has faded from her face. I can see lines as light and luminescent as the trail of a star in a dark night sky around her eyes. "You saw my face once before, Ella Crow. You look at me with clear eyes and you feel no fear."
