The moment the mausoleum door appeared at her back, Ava thought she’d feel a wave of relief, but she found herself eye to eye with Ruby. Her swirling gaze tried to pierce right through Ava’s mind, but she refused to let her in. No longer did Ava need to mask the power she possessed. Soon they would all know what the council does now. What Ava didn’t need is Ruby revealing how fearful she really was over what the council would decide.
“Well?” Ruby finally asked, her stoic look unchanging.
“They are making a decision.”
With that Ava stepped around Ruby, a tree rooted into the concrete steps, making her way back to the house. Ava could feel Ruby at her back within seconds, following her the entire way, only stopping her when they reached the porch.
“Ava, wait,” Ruby called out, sliding her hand over the door to stop Ava from going in. “What are they making a decision about?”
“Why does it matter to you?”
“Because I need to know.” Suddenly Ava understood Ruby’s position.
