Chapter 39: Two Steps Back

I tried my best to clear my mind of everything from the night before as I rushed into work. My mom glared at me and pointed to the clock, but I brushed past her, saying nothing as I headed to the back. We were both fully aware I was twenty minutes late, but I wanted to push that lecture and questioning until later that night, most likely at the dinner table.

I also needed to try to stop thinking about Caleb. I was angry at first, but as I drove to work and calmed down a bit, I became more confused than upset. What he’d said still wasn’t great to hear by any means, but I knew Caleb. We shared a connection that I still didn’t understand, but I knew it was special. He wasn’t the type of guy to drag me along just to get me into bed and then ditch me completely. Plus, he’d looked devasted when I was upset with him.

There had to be something more going on. What could have made him switch up so quickly?
