Chapter 49: The Final Decision

I went over what I wanted to say to Caleb as I drove to the bakery. I ignored the voice in my head that kept telling me to turn around, that I was setting myself up for heartbreak.

But I’d sworn to follow my heart all those years ago when I’d decided to go against Fate, so that’s what I was doing again.

As I headed into the bakery, I struggled to unlock the door with my shaking hands. I was both excited and nervous, so I couldn’t tell which one was causing it.

When I finally managed to get inside, I turned on the lights and took a moment to take in the silence. It was early, before the bakery opened, and I was determined to finish what I was doing before my dad arrived.

I went to the back, pulled my hair into a bun, and got started.

Once all of the ingredients were set out, I mixed the flour and sugar together. As I tossed the butter into a bowl so it could be melted, I heard the front door open.
