Chapter 13: The Warning
Amanda was so unsettled that she completely missed the driveway and ended up having to double back. By the time she got up to the house, she was frantic to see Levi, somehow afraid that the man would know where he was and come looking for him.
As soon as he’d let Levi’s name drop from his mouth, Amanda had rolled the window up and thrown the truck into reverse. He’d waved her off, falsely pleasant, like he knew something she didn’t. It unnerved her.
She hadn’t been followed. But that did little to ease the nervousness tying her stomach into knots.
She burst into the house and hurried past the children, who were eating lunch in the kitchen. Levi was on the couch, eating a sandwich and still reading her book. She dropped the shopping bags on the floor and hurried over to him.
“I need to talk to you.”
He raised a brow at her.
She looked nervously over her shoulder. “In private.”
