Chapter 21: The Goodbye
The pups were very quiet that morning.
Amanda wasn’t any different, though, as she put out bowls of cereal for everyone. She smiled tightly at Levi, who seemed unable to meet her eyes, and tried to gently coax conversation out of Dakota and Utah a few times, but ceased her attempts when it became clear that no one was in the mood.
Once they’d finished breakfast, the pups got up to help Amanda with the cleaning up, as usual. Levi said, “I’ll help her. You two look around and make sure you’ve picked up everything.”
They looked like they wanted to protest, but a glance from Levi silenced them. Together, they duly nodded their little heads and sulked away, dragging their feet.
As soon as the twins were out of earshot, Amanda leaned over to Levi. “When are you leaving?”
“Soon,” he said. “I don’t want to lose too much daylight.”
“Okay.”
