Chapter 20: The Proposal
Amanda fidgeted all throughout dinner.
As soon as the kids had woken up from the short nap, Levi had shown them both his healed shoulder, proudly proclaiming that he was able to turn into a wolf again. He’d not said anything directly about their leaving yet, but she noticed he was collecting the kids’ things, cleaning up after them more than usual as he went. She felt like she was holding her breath, just waiting for him to tell her he was leaving.
She supposed he didn’t want to say anything until it was time so that the pups wouldn’t be upset. But deep in her heart, she prayed that maybe he wasn’t saying anything because they weren’t leaving after all. Maybe, magically, Levi would just never say anything, and they would stay day after day after day, until… until winter ended. And Amanda left.
Either way, this wasn’t forever. They may as well have been playing house on the playground for the truth of their situation. She was only fooling herself.
