They made it halfway across the yard before he was upon them.

It was the same man who had held her down for Jed to torture. He was huge, and sprung out from behind the well-house and shivered into a wolf form in a blink, back paws digging deep into the snow as he jumped for them.

Amanda closed her eyes, wound up like a batter going for a home run, and hit him with the shovelhead with all her might. The reverberations of it rang through the pole she clutched to, jarring her arms and shaking her as she nearly fell. The wolf let out a high-pitched yelp before he hit the snow, hard, and lay there unmoving.

“Ha!” She rushed past him to where the twins were anxiously crowding the back door, watching after her with wide eyes. Not daring to drop the shovel, Amanda fumbled to open the latch, cursing when she found it was locked.

“Come on,” she told the pups. “Front door, let’s go.”
