Chapter 38: The Struggle

The pups bolted the moment the man started to shift, taking advantage of his momentary distraction. Amanda did the same, raising the shovel with a cry and charging at him. She was right, though, and it seemed her luck had run out; the moment she came close, he rushed at her, clamping his jaw down around the pole of the shovel.

Amanda kicked blindly at his head, sweat dripping into her eyes as her panic increased. He fought his way over the fallen laundry hamper, pushing her back into the tub. Amanda kicked him in the teeth and finally, he let go, allowing her to swipe at him with the shovel again.

The wolf danced out of the way, growling loud enough to vibrate the air.

She tried desperately to think, and last minute, remembered the gun downstairs. She could have kicked herself–how the h*ll had she forgotten about it? Surely, one of Jed’s men would have taken it already, but she hadn’t even looked!
