Chapter 40: The Victor

White hair was dirtied by blood and dirt, but Amanda had never seen a sight so wonderful in her entire life. Tired though she was, Amanda broke into a run at the sight of Levi limping on two legs, coming down through the treeline, a little worse for wear, but whole.

“Levi!”

He looked up, blinking in surprise before his mouth softened into a small smile. He dropped the pack slung over his shoulder and held his arms out, bracing for her.

Amanda fell into his arms, clutching tight as Levi held her. All the worry and fear from the night seemed to melt away in an instant, replaced only by the warmth and safety of Levi’s arms. She pressed her head to his chest, where she could hear the steady drum of his heart, and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Easy,” he huffed. “Gentle, I’m messed up.”

She immediately released her hold on him, stepping back with wide eyes.

Levi huffed. “I didn’t say get off entirely.”
