Chapter 45: The Call

The night before, between various rounds of copulating, Amanda had mentioned that it would be best if Levi just slipped out while she was still sleeping. It would be easier. He’d not really said much, so she figured he’d decided to ignore her.

Sometime in the early morning, though, Levi rolled over and kissed her forehead, just enough to barely wake her up.

“I love you,” he said.

Her heart fluttered. Sleepily, she murmured, “I love you, too.”

He’d smoothed over her hair and slipped out of bed, and she’d gone back to sleep.

That had been hours ago, and now that she was up, she knew.

He was gone.

Amanda took a shower, feeling strangely numb to Levi’s departure. She dressed, ate a late breakfast, and then sat in the living room staring out the back door. She knew without a doubt that she would not see Levi in that yard ever again. He would not be coming back through that familiar glass door.
