Chapter 27: What Friends Are For

DEMING WOODS, WA — BLOODCLAW TERRITORY

SAM’S POV

Placing the last food crate beside Gwen's house, I wipe sweat from my brow. Although the cold winds make my spine shudder every now and then, all the heavy lifting makes up for the chills.

“Anything else you need over here, Gwen?”

Said woman who is on kitchen duty for the banquet reveals herself from behind the cabinet, checking if everything is in order.

“Nope! That should do it for the food supply. Thanks for helping out, Sam.” She smiles.

“Don’t mention it.” I wave and am about to leave until I hear her whistle.

“Off to see your boyfriend?” She coos to which I tense in embarrassment.

I turn away again, now storming off. “Whatever!”

Even if it’s true, I hate that they always mention it.

Taking out my phone, I scroll through my recent texts. One from Nathan saying he was heading out for patrols in the morning, and the other from Ray.
