At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

Twin Ray

I start my way backward on the beach. Then take my time running my hands through the sand repetitiously. The high tides have swept many mysteries under the beige grains. The sun bears heavy against my back, turning my brown skin golden.


I feel the weight of his gaze intensify the closer I inch. My feet are buried in the sand and tucked under the layer of my skirt. Beads of sweat drip down my brow and into the sand below me. 


“Islet,” Calls his familiar voice. I take a deep breath and turn my gaze on him. Azure eyes watch me closely. “What are you doing?”


I smile at him unconsciously. “I found something I want you to see,” I say and turn my hands back to the warm, smooth, piece I’ve caught between two fingers. 


I fish the clear sparkling shard from deep below the sand’s surface. It takes him a moment, but the Prince stoops to my level and leans in, his earthy scent mixes with the smell of the sea.
