At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

I move my face before we kiss. At least I think we were going to kiss. If the Prince is disappointed, his face doesn’t show it. 


I shake off the warm feeling running through my body. “We should get back. They’re probably looking all over for you.” I say hurriedly. Cerulean nods. 


“Yes, we should.” He says he raises my hand and kisses my knuckles. Tingles travel up my arm with every peck.


I gape at him. ‘Is he serious? Is this real life?’


“We have to hurry.” He says in that tone, that rasp that makes my head foggy.


I gulp down every sensation, trying to savor the taste of my emotions as deep as I can store it.


We hurry, though I’m sure we were dragging our feet. Even the tide pulled by the moon was moving faster than us.


When we arrive, we separate just to keep up appearances. I go through the garden to the fields and through the back. 


Cerulean goes through the front. As he should, even though he boldly pushed away his duties for me.
