At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

The palace gates are wide open today. Light beams from each window of the palace into the evening sky, like the sun on earth breaking clouds apart and showering the dirt path with warm light. 


My carriage pulls up behind hundreds of others putting me quite far back from the actual palace doors. Father has chosen to escort me, like the gentlemen he is.


He hops from the carriage and puts out a hand for me to take.


With his watchful eyes, I make it safely to the ground and up the pathing. 


“This is as far as I take you. I have to work the shift today,” Father says solemnly.


He chuckles and places a kiss on my forehead. “If it was that simple, I would do it. But the king…he’s told me things he’d have my head for if I left.”
