After convincing some of the maids to prepare the trade proposal announcement fliers, I make my way to my father.
“Have you got a moment?” I ask him. He’s stood just outside the king’s chambers.
“For my daughter? All the time in the world.”
“Great. I need you to go to my house, collect all the materials from the dive spots, and bring them here. Don’t forget to bring the deeds as well.”
My father frowns and turns his burly weight towards me. His shadow blacks out the light of the lantern.
“What’s going on?”
“I’m preparing a dowry fit for a queen.”
He blinks silently.
The only sound is our breathing.
“I will help you. But I am not happy.”
“Forgive me, Father. I should be more clear. I am with the crown prince, eventually, I will be queen. I am preparing my dowry for myself.”
A big smile stretches over his face and he wraps his arms around me in a tight hug. I hug him back as much as I can.
