Side Story 2: Mace Meets Luke's Family

A week later, it was Mace’s turn to get nervous as she stood with Luke outside their gate on a warm Saturday afternoon. Just as Luke was about to open their gate, Mace grabbed his hand and pulled him back.

“Whoa!” Luke exclaimed, not expecting the force of Mace’s pull.

He turned back and gave Mace an alarmed look. “What’s wrong?”

Mace hung back and held Luke’s hand tightly. It was only then that he noticed just how cold and clammy her hand was. Realizing his girlfriend’s anxiety, Luke’s face softened. Reaching out to pull her to his chest, Luke gently smoothed her hair.

“It’s okay Mace,” he said hoping his calm voice would soothe her. “They will love you, I’m sure of it!”

Mace wrapped her arms around his waist. “I’m sorry Luke,” she said in a small voice. “I’m just a bunch of nerves right now. I really am scared to death of meeting your family.”

Luke pulled back and Mace’s chin so that she could look into her eyes. “Hey Babe, look at me.”
