Sallying forth the night city

The story my dad told us was as I had expected. However something bothers me. He mentioned that I started acting strange when I became 9.

I still can't remember it. On the other hand Trevor is rolling on the ground with his face covered.

"It's no use. You actually acted like that back then. That is something I vaguely remember. What I clearly remember was Gwen's smirk after that."

He stopped rolling. I guess he still thinks that his sister is a good girl who is always good at everything. That wasn't the case for me.

I could see her as nothing but an ignorant and happy go lucky girl. She liked to scheme a lot.

"Samantha, do you remember what happened when I was 9?"

"I do. Want me to tell you?" (Samantha)

"You still can't remember?" (Dad)

"Yeah. Seems like I can't. Tell me, Samantha."

"Long story short, you had begun your training. As a harbinger, you need to be trained from a young age. The first training is experiencing death. However your birth pretty much did that part.

The next was to realize death. One day, you found a dead cat. You didn't think too much of it and buried it. Then you saw someone kill a dog. That was when you started wondering if death is the same for everyone.

And you started your quest for knowledge. The final ordeal was to cause someone's death. Which you splendidly did. And you had completed all the conditions of becoming a harbinger." (Samantha)

She said long story short but isn't that rather long. I was becoming a harbinger from that many years ago. I see.

"So, he had started to become a harbinger. That's why he changed." (Dad)

"No. You can say that he was becoming his real self. It's just that he stopped acting like before because death is a heavy subject." (Samantha)

Me and dad were satisfied with this explanation. The only one who is totally confused is Trevor.

"Can anyone explain? What is a harbinger?" (Trevor)

"You don't need to know. You already have a position as a hero. Don't overstep your boundaries." (Samantha)

She normally isn't like this. But she is lashing out at Trevor.

Trevor starts bickering with Samantha while I keep thinking.

I was already becoming a harbinger when I was 9. I started thinking about death and killed someone myself. I then started gathering knowledge. I probably trained as well.

Because when I applied for the mining job, I was asked to temporarily work. If I can keep up with them, I would be hired. I started working and they never told me leave. I think my physical side was already covered.

I am saying it because many might think I am cheat. Which I actually am. But even then, I did the basics right.

I get up. Samantha grabs my head probably due to the shaking.

"Don't stand up so suddenly." (Samantha)

"Sorry about that. Dad, how about we go home?"

"We should. Your mom might wake up." (Dad)

"Trevor, how about we have a walk? I can send you back here."

"Why would I go with you?" (Trevor)

I coerced him into coming with us. I wanted to see the night city although I don't think anything is open.

We keep walking through the hallway before we arrived at a big gate.

"This is the main gate. But the guards are standing outside." (Trevor)

I just made the guards pass out and open the small gate. You know, the one guards use for going out and coming in.

"They'll wake up in about 10 minutes so don't worry. Let's go."

I keep walking. Trevor is still staring at me with a weird face but I ignore him and enjoy my night stroll. But Samantha is still up on my shoulders.

"Are you not coming down?"

"No. This is pretty nice. I can never see this high on my own." (Samantha)

"Fine. But are you eating properly? You weigh practically nothing."

"How rude. I am making my body weightless for your sake." (Samantha)

"No need. I keep forgetting that you are on my shoulders. So you don't have to be modest."

"Fine!!" (Samantha)

After that I started feeling something on my shoulders. It's not weightless but this weight is nothing at all. I mean, girls tend to be lighter. Eden is also light.

"Clive, do you know the way around?" (Dad)

"I'll figure it out. Trevor, don't you know the way?"

"No. I don't really go outside. The only places I go to are the forest and the training ground." (Trevor)

"What are you doing? You are wasting a good chance."

"Unlike the carefree you, we all have a have duty. We are to fight for the sake of humanity." (Trevor)

This is one of those alright! Fighting for the sake of humanity. To prevent the destruction of humans on behalf of the gods.

"Trevor, tell me, who told you to fight? And fight who?"

"The gods summoned us to fight the demons. Demons have threatened humanity time after time. We are to fight the demons and defeat the demon king to protect humanity." (Trevor)

He sure said a whole lot. However, this sounds so fake that I can't even laugh.

"Samantha, who is the current demon king?"

"It should be her. The only daughter of the previous demon king. But she is only 12. How can she fight a war?" (Samantha)

Samantha is confused as well. Didn't you say that you know everything.

(I know. But this isn't how it should be. The demon king is dead. How did that happen?)

She sounds uncertain. So something has changed.

I try to search for a demon who fits that description through my search and found one target. The target is currently asleep.

I decided to bring her here. It took a hefty amount of mana but the job was done.

Suddenly a petite girl appeared, floating in the air. Her hair is ash grey and she has a pair of small horns sticking out of her head. She just looks like a kid.

"Trevor, here is your demon king."

I hadn't noticed that Trevor was so shocked his voice had stopped. But he gulped it down and said in a stutter.

"What….what…..where…wh..did she..come from?" (Trevor)

"I teleported her here. Anyway, you can kill her now or in war. Decision is yours."

"Wait, are you telling me that SHE is the demon king?" (Trevor)

"Yes. She IS the demon king."

I thought he wouldn't believe me. But he accepted it pretty quickly. In the end, I sent the kid away. I didn't want her to wake up and see our faces.

"Trevor, I won't ask you to do as I say but make your own judgment. I think that bastard Jupiter is involved in this somehow."

"The god king bestowed us with an oracle. He said that the demon king will destroy humanity. So as a hero, I need to kill him and offer his soul to the gods." (Trevor)

I get the gist of it. I think I should harass HIM a bit.

I charge my mana. On my fingertip, I create a small ball of light and ask Samantha.

(Where should I shoot?)

(To your right. Shoot at approximate 54 degree angle.)

I shoot the ball and disappeared in a second. The gods live just above the clouds. So this should be a nice present for them.

I also have something that is not magic. But that'll have to wait for later.

"What did you do?" (Trevor)

"I sent a gift to the gods. It'll take them a while to realize where it came from. So how about you return to your castle? I will send you the that training ground."

"Okay." (Trevor)

He is actually trusting me. I thought this would not happen this quickly. Isn't he a little to easy?

I send him back.

"We should go back as well. Samantha, it's time for you to go back."

"Fine. I'll be back again." (Samantha)

Saying that she disappeared. Me and dad keep walking.

"Clive, what do you think about the baby's name?" (Dad)

"Shouldn't you decide?"

"But you are going to be a big brother. How about you pick a name as well?" (Dad)

"I will think. But it'll be a while so let's be patient."

In the end, we walked to home and sneaked inside. Our night stroll came to an end.
