Please do well to read the note under the story

Rita strolled out suddenly into his presence, breaking

into the train of his thought. She was a gorgeous girl,

not really the naturally beautiful type and coming out of

the same mould as the typical campus girl. She was

not in the cadre of girls that believed in romance and

love, although as Oberon, she was a friend of true lovers.

From her own perspective, every relationship was a

contract of some sort for she did not advocate an

unconditional love.

*Hello Stanley!* she greeted him and wasting no

further time on courtesy, she added, *You wanted to

see me?*

*Yes... and I hope you aren't in a hurry?* Stanley

asked.*I could spare fifteen minutes!*

*It's okay. I'll be through by then,* he muttered.

*I'm all ears,* she said with an exaggerated

enthusiasm.

*I wanted to ask you about one of your friends...

She has been here before and I saw you with her around

the New Arts Theatre yesterday afternoon. She's tall,

about three inches above you, so well-proportioned

and one of the most beautiful girls I've set my eyes on

in our school.*

*Sandra?*

*Yes... I remember the name... Sandra*

*You want her?* Rita asked flatly.

*Yes,* Stanley replied.

*So many guys want Sandra... so many... and some

are even offering her the gates of heaven. I doubt if

you'll be different from the suitors she has turned her

back on.*

Rita said calmly.

*Rita, I've always believed in that adage; nothing

venture, nothing gain. How can I fail even before I've

asked her out. I'II be the one to change her mind,*

Stanley said confidently.

*But I thought I saw her wave to you yesterday.

You speak as if you've only just met her,* Rita said

mildly.

*I don't really know her... met her during the first week

of registration and not until yesterday I saw her,*

Stanley lied.

*So, what do you want me to do? Tell her about*

*I want you to do more than that! I want you to

sell me to her... You know what I mean,* Stanley said

optimistically.

*I can assure you that it's not going to work... Ask

me why,* Rita said, not sounding one bit keen about

Stanley's plans to involve her in the pursuit of her friend.

*Why?* Stanley asked innocently.

*Sandra is in love with somebody else!*

*Who's the guy?* Stanley asked innocently.

*His name is Billy Davies and he is a first year Law

student and a businessman. She sees nobody outside

him. Don't bother yourself Stanley or you'll only end

up making a fool of yourself,* Rita advised.

*I think I know the guy... He's the proprietor of

one of these fashion houses, right?*

*You're right.*

*Then it's his money!*

That's where you go wrong. Sandra comes from

a very comfortable home. Her father is an engineer

and her mother is a pharmacist. Check out their house

at Marian Extension and you'll know what I'm talking

about. What can Billy offer her that her parents cannot

afford. She just loves the boy and if I were you, I'll venture to forget her*
