Chapter 69 - Where Are We Going?

"I don't know, something about you just screams that you are a prince."

"I just mocked you this morning, and now you think I'm a prince? I didn't know the bar to be a prince was this low," Denzel replied. He glanced at Echo, and then reached for his pocket as they left the main door of the entrance.

He gave a slight bow as he moved in front of her, still holding her hand, "Please stay here, madame. I shall retrieve thy chariot!"

Echo did not know if the demon was mocking her, or being a gentleman. She just gave a slight nod, as he gently let her hand go and walked to his car.

The demon drove a white sports car straight up to the entrance. It was a two door car, that was well taken care of, and the paint was glistening. Denzel stepped out, and walked to the passenger side, opening the door for Echo, "After you, madame!"

Echo had her eyes on the car, and at the doors that opened outwards and upwards (butterfly doors). "I don't know if you're mocking me, or just being nice," Echo replied as she got into the car.

The inside was so much better than the outside. The car was much spacious, and the whole interior was made of white leather. The seats were so comfortable that Echo could just doze off with the ability to dream about peace and joy. She had never been in any car that had such perfect seats.

Denzel hurried over to the driver's side, and pushed his seat front for the tiger to get into the back. The back was cramped, and Hunter had less space, but still managed to find the most comfortable spot on the seat.

Denzel got into the car, and checked his mirrors, before switching off the e-brakes. He switched the gear, and gently nudged the car out of the mansion.

Echo stared out of the window as she remembered her several car rides with her family. One of her most favourite rides was when her family was on a road trip. They were lost on the highway, but managed to find their way back onto the road. She remembered the music that was playing, and the exact words her father spoke, "We'll find our way back onto the road. Even if we don't, we're together. So I guess we are not really lost."

How that line was so different now! Only if they were still together, would things have been much different? Echo felt helpless, she was a powerful supernatural entity, yet she knew nothing about the accident that killed her. Recently she began to wonder if she did really die in the accident, and if she did, where was she buried. Maybe Damon was able to answer her questions, right?

Denzel glanced at Echo. The car was silent, besides the roaring engine that he was trying so hard not to revv. He was used to the silence, but he began to wonder if he was being polite by not talking, or was it the other way round. He took a quick glance at Echo once again, "Everything alright?" he finally broke the ice.

Echo was so caught up in her thoughts that she did not understand what Denzel said. She turned her gaze to him, "Did you say something?" she asked.

Denzel smirked, "I just wanted to know if you're okay. You were really silent."

"Sorry! I just remembered something about the past," Echo replied with a small curve on her lips. She glanced down at her fingers, while she fidgeted with them. She turned her gaze to Denzel with curiosity, "What about you? How was your past? Was it happy? Sad? Melodramatic? Romance?"

Denzel laughed, "Romance? Me! You are far from the correct word, sweetheart!"

"So it was sad then? Dark and lonely?"

Denzel glanced at Echo, "Let's keep the past in the past, shall we? It's not always sunshine and rainbows."

Echo's eyebrows twitched involuntarily as she mumbled, "Who said anyone's life was full of sunshine and rainbows?"

"No one has to say it. Everyone just assumes it!" Denzel replied.

Echo whipped her head to Denzel. "You weren't supposed to hear that," she whispered. She turned away from him and squeezed her eyes shut in embarrassment. What was she thinking? They were in a small car, of course he was going to hear even the smallest thing she mumbles.

Denzel snuck a glance at Echo through the side view mirror. He then thought to himself, 'She seems to have dropped her guard. This would be a good time to get more intel from her. Or should I wait longer to break the ice? I should take a longer route.' He turned off to a sub road, hoping to waste more time.

The road Denzel turned on was jammed, leaving him with more time to speak with Echo. "You must be a pretty big thing with the Protectors, just like the Onix?"

Echo sighed in disagreement, "I am actually pretty much useless in my world. Everyone thinks that I am useless, just because I messed up on my first mission."

"Oh! I've been there plenty of times. One of the worst things ever," Denzel replied. He made quick glances at Echo, while maintaining his gaze on the road. He sighed, "Sorry. I think it's going to be a long ride," he apologised to her.

Echo smiled sweetly, "It's alright, you couldn't have known about the traffic jam." She did not want Denzel to feel bad about something he did not do, but she began to question him. Where was he taking her, and why did it have to be when Damon was out? Did he want to make Damon jealous? But there were several other methods to succeed in that. Damon was an easy target, so why all the fuss?

"Where are we going?" Echo asked. She turned to Denzel and gave him the most innocent expression she could. Her eyebrows were slightly raised, and her eyes were enlarged.

"You'll see, sweetheart!"
