Callie sighed and looked at Adam seriously. "You don't drag me down. Why do you always think that? I was losing my mind thinking you didn't care anymore and that you would kick us out the whole time you were gone because you didn't say anything."

He couldn't stop the curse that slipped out. He should have known. He knew Callie got anxious and her brain went to weird places when she was stressed. Why hadn't he accounted for that?

"I'm NEVER going to kick you out. Got that?"

"You don't know that for sure. Even before things got better for you, I figured you would only let us stay here until Carter was grown up. But if you don't want to play dad anymore and want to go make more friends now, there's nothing I can do to stop you," she said sadly.

Adam was horrified. Why would she think that?! Did she really think he was only in this for Carter?
