W-Wait, this wasn't the one I told you to pick at all!

Reader, didn't I tell you that I put every scary thing I could possibly think of in this story? There will be far too many pitfalls where we can screw up! Not to mention, it looks like this damn system changes the story to make everything more realistic. That just means that the ghosts will be even scarier than they already were!

...I really am not good with scary things. The only reason I could write this thing was that it was in the form of text. Oh god, I can't believe you literally threw a free and easy chance out the window!

[By the way, you can always just select the other stories later]

[The blue sky was shining bright, the start of a brand new day, with countless possibilities. On said day, there was a teenage girl walking along a path, skipping along with a smile on her face.]

Tsk, I already don't like it! It's too happy, meaning it's totally gonna become all dark soon!

[The girl's name was Sayori. She had bright blue eyes, and light brown hair. Just her general presence seemed to make everything seem a little brighter. Though, her clothes looked quite worn, making for a strange contrast.]

There must be some twist coming up... maybe Sayori is secretly the worst ghost of them all!

[Around her was a rather spacious plain, with not a single other person in sight. It was quite a strange place for a teenager to be on foot, but there was a reason for all that. She was off to a town not too far away, which contained a mansion rumored to have ghosts within.]

Sayori: Hmm... I wonder if ghosts really do exist.

It's a story! Of course they do!

[Though, that wasn't really the part that Sayori was concerned about. Rather, another part of the rumor said that the person that decided to live in said mansion would receive five hundred dollars every single day. It was the part that attracted quite a few outsiders to try and live inside said mansion.]

Sayori: I wonder if the rumor is true... do they really give five hundred dollars?

Eh? That's the part of the rumor you're wondering about?

[And it was also what attracted Sayori. Off in the distance, was a village, just barely in sight. The smile on her face brightened considerably when she saw it, and she picked up her pace.]

Sayori: Please let the mansion be vacant!

[Upon getting closer to the village, Sayori overheard quite a bit of yelling. She got closer to find out what it was about.]

Some Old Man: Wait, what if I increase the pay?

Some Terrified Guy: No! No! I'm not taking another step closer to that place!

[There was an old man holding onto the leg of another guy. The guy was desperately trying to run away, but the old man along with a few others were all holding him back.]

Some Old Man: How about this, you only have to spend eighteen hours there each day.

Some Terrified Guy: I said no! I don't care if it kills me, I'm not setting foot in that damn place ever again! You can keep your damn money!

...Crap, this is bad.

[Sayori scratched the side of her cheek, not too sure what they were talking about. She nonchalantly walked up to them and waved her hand amicably.]

Sayori: Hi there! I don't know what's going on, but it's not good to fight!

[The guy looked at Sayori as though she was his ray of light]

Some Terrified Guy: Please help me! These damn villagers want to sacrifice anybody they can!

Some Old Man: We aren't sacrificing anybody! It's just a normal deal!

[Sayori tilted her head to the side innocently]

Sayori: Are you talking about the haunted mansion?

[Both the guy and the people dragging him back froze in place, looking at her awkwardly. After a few seconds, the old man suddenly let go of the guy and stood in front of her with a bright smile.]

Some Old Man: Ah, yes. Are you perhaps interested in staying? The mansion is completely free to stay in, with no power or water bills. Food will be delivered to your place, and you will even get five hundred dollars every day!

[The guy frowned]

Some Terrified Guy: Don't trust that guy! It's not worth it at all, that damn mansion really is haunted!

Some Old Man: W-What? That's ridiculous, ghosts don't exist!

[Sayori put a finger on her chin]

Sayori: Eh? So it really was a rumor after all... you don't actually get any money?

[The guy blinked with a bit of confusion]

Some Confused Guy: Eh? No, the money is real, but the ghosts are too! If you care about your life, then you will run away! Seriously, you gotta run!

[Sayori smiled brightly]

Sayori: So it's not a rumor! Is the mansion vacant? I would like to take it!

This girl's priorities are very... strange.

Some Confused Guy: What? No, don't do it! Trust me, it's not-

Some Old Man: Madam, would you like to start right now? We can do an upfront payment if you'd like.

Some Confused Guy: Don't do it! Ser-

[The old man placed his hand on the guy's shoulder firmly and waved several bills in front of him. Then, he whispered.]

Some Old Man: Hey, there's a person here willing to take your place. You can just take your cut for the day, and you will be free. No need to do anything else, right?

Some Confused Guy: But...

Some Old Man: It's not your problem, you know? That's what you were saying earlier.

Some Bribed Guy: ...

Tsk, the power of money. I would never be swayed like that!

...At least, not for that amount!

[Without another word, the guy took the payment for staying in the mansion for a day and walked off as though none of this actually happened. Sayori didn't feel anything suspicious from this, and even smiled happily.]

Sayori: Ah, that's great! You guys stopped fighting.

Some Bribed Guy: ...

Some Old Man: Hahaha, of course, of course. There was never any real conflict between us! Now, I heard you were interested in staying at the mansion. Just know, if you don't get it now, then someone else could!

This guy is starting to sound like a shady car salesman. Is he gonna talk about my extended warranty next?

[Sayori gasped]

Sayori: Oh no, could I please have it? If someone else really really wants it, then I guess I could give it up, but...

Some Old Man: Of course it's free! But I'm not sure for how long...

Sayori: Then I'll take it!

Some Old Man: Haha, of course, follow me, follow me!

[The both of them began smiling brightly, but both of the smiles felt quite different. The old man excitedly led the way, almost like an eager child. As for Sayori, she matched the man's pace, trailing behind at the same speed.]

...This girl is too gullible! There is no way we are going to clear this story, she'll probably trip over something and die!

[Soon enough, they reached the mansion. As befitting of a mansion, it was enormous. However, it didn't carry the luster that one would expect out of one. Instead, the colors were all dark, without any proper color scheme. Thus, the sight of it was quite discordant and jarring. However, none of this bothered Sayori.]

Sayori: So I have this entire place all to myself?

Some Old Man: ...Haha, yes! Not another... living soul will be with you in there.

That's because all of the ghosts are dead!

Sayori: Wow, that was... far simpler than I thought it would be!

Some Old Man: Haha, of course! Here, have an advance payment. By taking it, you agree to stay in the house for at least a day to repay it."

[The old man handed her some bills that totaled up to five hundred dollars, just as promised. He rubbed his hands together just like a shady businessman, but Sayori just took it as a sign of goodwill.]

Sayori: Hehe, I can't believe the rumors were true after all! I almost thought I came all the way out here for nothing...

[She put her hands on her hips and looked at the house that she now owned. After a few seconds of admiring, she pushed open the door and walked in.]

Sayori: Wow!

This... can't be good...

[The place was surprisingly clean, and in fact almost spotless. Unlike the outside, the inside of the place looked quite nice and vibrant. The color schemes actually made some sense, and the colors were bright, and all of the decorations were quite lavish, but not excessively so. This made the already excited Sayori even more energetic.]

Sayori: This place... is beautiful!

[Sayori proceeded to rush through all the rooms, exploring them all. It was almost like she was a child in a candy store. From the living room, to the kitchen, to an indoor pool, and even more.]

Sayori: Everything is so huge!

[All of the rooms were quite large, making it feel extremely spacious. Though, if one were to live alone in such a place, that may actually be a negative thing, because that extra space would make one feel even more alone. However, that didn't seem to be a problem for Sayori.]

She's way too reckless! What if a ghost shows up? This idiot!

[Exploring the entire mansion took quite a while since Sayori inspected every tiny little thing. She found many different things she wasn't expecting. However, there wasn't even a trace of any ghosts.]

Sayori: Hm... did I miss the ghosts?

Tsk! The ghosts will let you see them when they want you to! There's no way someone as airheaded as you would ever survive in this place, you should leave now!

[By now, it was evening. Sayori was exhausted from walking all the way here, and also exploring the place. As such, she directly went to the bed, intending on sleeping. The bed felt so fluffy and soft, that she drifted off into sleep almost immediately.]

...Well, I guess now the ghost stuff starts.

[Sayori slept peacefully for most of the night, but just before the sun was about to rise, there was a knock on her door. Not the door to enter the mansion, but the one right outside of the bedroom.]

Sayori: Mm... I'll wake up later...

What? You gotta wake up now!

...Wait, maybe it's better if you stay asleep.

[The knocks were strangely slow, and sporadic. It was almost like the person knocking was a feeble old man, just barely able to do so. However, they steadily grew louder and louder, to the point that the average person would have their knuckles bleed if they hit the door that hard.]

Sayori: Mmmm... ok, ok I'm coming!

No, no, no! Don't open the door, you airhead!

[Sayori got up from the bed, while rubbing her eyes. She was still half asleep and casually walked over to the door to open it. She let out a yawn as she did so.]

Sayori: Hello, who is it?

You idiot! Idiottt!

[Standing opposite to her, was a lanky ghost, staring at her speechlessly]

Look at what you've done!

Ghost: ...What the-

Sayori: Hm? Is something the matter?

Ghost: ...Aren't you like, supposed to be scared?

Sayori: What do you mean? Why should I be scared?

...Huh? Are my eyes broken?
