At the time of the news, Josephine was having breakfast with the rest of the workers when the report was released. She almost choked on her tea.
How did Iyare set this up? She asked herself. She clearly saw Iyare murder Cece in cold blood; how did Charles get arrested for it.
'They underestimated her,' Josephine thought and bit her lower lips. No wonder Iyare did not mind her talking to the police. Besides, if she told the truth, she would go to jail as well, that is, if Iyare did not kill her before that.
"No wonder she never came back yesterday," Josephine heard one of the workers comment.
"I guess this has to do with the package the madam received on Saturday," Merry joined in. The other workers nod in agreement.
"Josephine, did you poison the young madam's coffee?" a curious young maid asked. Of course, they all wanted to know about it, but no one dared to ask.
The injury on Josephine's leg spoke volumes, but confirmation was always better. Josephine pretends not to hear the question and concentrates on her meal.
"I guess you did, then," the young maid said again, and everyone in the room looked at Josephine's reactions. A sigh left Josephine's mouth. 'Stupid,' she cursed in her head. 'How could we (Cece and Josephine) underestimate Iyare the way we did.' She guesses she would have to cooperate with Iyare for her good.
"The police are here to ask questions about Cece," the security man, who had just walked in, announced. All the workers stopped chatting and waited for the police to come inside.
The two police officers simple nodded their heads. They were there to talk to anyone who had seen Cece on the day of the incident.
"We want to ask questions to solve the case of your dead colleague. We know you all saw the news. So if you know anything, please cooperate with us," one officer said. The workers agreed with the request.
"We would like to talk to those who saw her yesterday before the incident," the officers said.
Josephine and the two workers who saw Cece leaving the house that day raised their hands.
"The rest of you can excuse us,' the police officer says. After everyone else left the room, the officers sat opposite Josephine and the two workers, who raised their hands up.
"I am Tim, and my colleague is Jerry," Tim introduced themselves to the trio. "Tell us what you remember that day and anything you feel will help solve the case,"
"Sir, the previous day, our madam received a mysterious package. I am not sure of its content, but I am sure it was nothing good, so she called a meeting.
Apparently, Cece was the one who received the package," The young maid who spoke earlier answered first. The police officers nodded for her to continue. "Someone also poisons the madam's coffee during the meeting.
Yesterday, Josephine and Cece were both carried out of the mansion. I guess they were taken for questioning. After an hour or so, Josephine was brought back, still unconscious, while Cece walked back to the mansion alone. She stepped into her room and then left the mansion almost immediately," the maid finished explaining.
"Did you notice any injuries on her?" Tim asked.
"I did not pay much attention; I was busy. I just saw her walk passed me. Besides, she got a cap that seemed to convert her face.
The police officer noded their head. It did not cross their mind that the person this maid saw could be someone else. They already concluded that she must have coved her face because of that injury on her face. No woman would want to look scary.
"Where is the Josephine that was carried along with her?" Jerry asked. The young maid pointed her hand while Josephine nodded in response.
"Tells us what happened at Sam's office? Josephine immediately opened her mouth and narrated everything that happened in the torture room. Of course, she left out the part of Cece dying there.
After asking a few more questions, the police officers decided to leave since they did not find anything suspicious. The story they heard was convincing. Iyare only tortured her but never killed her. After all, it was confirmed, by the hospital, that some first aid treatment was used after the torture. And Josephine just confirmed it. It also seemed that Iyare needed them alive to find whoever wanted to kill her.
Before leaving the mansion, they stopped at Sam's office to ask Sam some questions about the torture and package. Sam had secretly listened to their conversation with Josephine and the rest. So he said almost the same thing.
"Mr Sam, you know taking Laws into your own hands is a crime?" Jerry asked.
"Yes, we know that we are willing to be compelled with the Law, but we fear my boss enemy, maybe someone powerful. How else will someone be able to breach the house's security system?
Including the one in the area, so we wanted to find out who our madman has offered before taking it to the police; we were scared of alerting the enemy with our visit to the police," Sam explained.
The police officers nodded their heads. The late Mr Onasa was a wealthy man and would definitely have strong rivals; besides, they confessed the crime themselves. Who murdered her is what they were more interested in; with this in mind, the police decided not to make things too difficult for them.
They left the house to wait for the officers that went to Ona's group to interrogate Iyare.
Meanwhile, Iyare and Andrew were sitting opposite the police, answering questions.
After answering the same questions over and over again, Iyare got irritated. One of the detectives had a hunch that what happened to Charles may have been a set-up.
He immediately suspected Iyare after learning about the board members voting on Monday. So he kept asking the same question in different ways, so Iyare or Andrew could say something he could use as a cue for his hunch.
Andrew noticed the irritation in Iyare's face, so he decided to end the questioning before she got angry and lost control.
"Look, Mr Doug, I am not sure why you keep asking the same questions over and over again, but we already told you all we know. My boss is a busy woman with a company to run, so I suggest you leave if you no longer have questions to ask," Andrew said.
"So it was because of the company that you framed him?" Doug asked, looking at Iyare. He was hoping that asking them directly would take them by surprise, and they would slip something essential or at least become alert and make mistakes.
His hunch has always been correct, so he could not come to terms with the fact that it was wrong this time. It was not wrong, but could he ever find out the truth?
"Why would I frame him because of my company?" Iyare asked, looking surprised.
"Everyone knows that he is your competitor for the president seat of the company, so setting him up like this, allows you to take the seat; after all, I hear he is a favoured candidate," Mr Doug answered.
"Oh, you are wrong there; Mr Charles wants my sit, which makes him the prime suspect of the threat I received on Saturday. One of the maids involve happens to be his lover, so I should be the one suspecting him of attempting murder.
Besides, there is no competition between us, he owns the votes of all the board members, and I own the majority shares of the company.
The board meeting this morning was just to allow the board members to have their say, while I will still have my way," Iyare's explanation was direct.
"What do you mean by 'have your way?" Mr Doug asked; he was unwilling to give up.
"I own 70 percent of the company's shares. Do you think there is a debate about who should be the president?" Iyare asked with raised brows. How could this detective not understand something this simple? Iyare wonders to herself.
The detective took a deep breath, he was still not convinced, but he knew he had no evidence. So he decided to drop it until he heard what his colleagues found out from the other employees in the house. Maybe he would get a new cue.
