The following day Amina freshened up early after the maid came to call her for breakfast. When she got to the dining room, she met Iyare eating her breakfast.
"Good morning," she greeted and sat close to Iyare, who was sitting at the head of the table.
"Morning," Iyare replied and continued her breakfast without looking at Amina.
"I know you asked me to discuss my decision with that Shelley lady, but I think I will feel more comfortable talking to you. Since you invited me here and you are the one my friend gave my Code," Amina said while watching Iyare's every move.
"Do you have something you want to ask?" Iyare asked.
"Yes, I want to know why you invited me from Ng. I am sure you could have found capable hands here," Amina said.
"Yes, there are a lot of capable hands here, but I need someone I can trust," Iyare answered truthfully.
"Trust? You don't even know me. How can you trust me?" Amina asked, surprise evident in her voice.
"Yes, I don't know you. But I know your friend Iyare, and I trust her. She trusts you, so I can trust you," Iyare replied. Iyare knew Amina was trustworthy, and she wished to have her as a friend in this life. Back in Ng, Amina was very nice to her. She stood up for her, especially when their other roommates tried to mock or bully her.
Amina nodded, Iyare's answer made sense, but this answer led her to her plan to confirm Iyare's identity.
"How did you meet my friend Iyare?" Amina asked, adjusting herself in her seat and using that opportunity to glance at Iyare's face.
She caught Iyare biting her lower lips, something her friend did when she was about to lie. Like Amina, Iyare was not good at lying to those she cared about.
Iyare licked her lip to think about her story after biting down on it. She expected Amina to ask this question, so she had already prepared a story.
Amina looked at the woman in front of her, becoming more convinced that she was her friend. But she knew it was best to be patient and follow the plans to the end.
"It was about a year ago. At that time, I met my father, who was training me to take over the company. You know my father was very good with computers, just like you.
So when I ran into Iyare, who happens to be my namesake. We got talking, and I found out she was good, so I employed her to teach me, which she did.
She later gave me the code saying that you were far better than her, but I never used it since I thought my father would teach me everything, but he died, so I thought to contact you," Iyare finished narrating her imaginary story.
Amina nodded, but she did not believe a word Iyare had just said. Since the latter kept licking her lips like Iyare would do when lying.
"So you want me to teach you?" Amina asked.
"No, I want you to work in the company. I am afraid I will not have enough time to learn," Iyare explain.
"I understand all you just said, but how can I be sure you are not lying to me. You know Iyare is dead and can't verify your words," Amina said.
"I know it is hard for you, but at least you can give me the benefit of the doubt. Besides, you sounded like you trusted your friends so much, so do you think she will give your code to someone that can harm you?" Iyare asked.
Amina shakes her head to mean no. So far, the lady before Amina convinced her that she was Iyare.
"Don't get this the wrong way, but I am a bit sceptical, especially since I feel Iyare got murdered," Amina said.
Iyare was short of words. Was Amina still thinking she killed her? If not for the fact that Iyare was sure Amina would not believe her, she would have told her the truth already.
"I don't know about that," Iyare remarked.
"I know; it's just that I am suspicious of her mother; that woman hated her so much," Amina said. She watches as Iyare's mood goes from sour to angry, like she could murder someone.
This was the exact reaction Iyare will give. After all, no matter how close Iyare was to this lady, the lady would not have such a natural reaction when Iyare's mother is mentioned unless she was Iyare.
"You know I went to her house when I got your messages, but that woman told me, Iyare was a forbidden topic in the house," Iyare tightened her fist when she heard this. It was fortunate that her mother was not there. The woman might have breathed her last.
Iyare was so engrossed with her hate that she did not notice the smirk now playing on Amina's face.
"Chubby," Amina called.
"Don't call me that," Iyare snapped unconsciously. Amina's smirk turns into a grin. She used to call Iyare chubby back in college, and Iyare hated it. She constantly snaps at her not to call her that. The name reminded Iyare of her look, so she hated it.
"When did you plan to tell me the truth?" Amina asked in amazement.
"Wait! What are you talking about?" Iyare could not keep up with Amina's chain of thought.
"Don't play dumb with me, Iyare; when were you planning to tell me the truth?" Amina snaps at her. She was not very patient, so she did not have time to play hide and seek games with Iyare.
"I really don't get you," Iyare said, confused about Amina's reaction.
"I am asking when you plan on telling me you are my friend and not some namesake," Amina answered; she was a straightforward person.
Iyare widens her eyes in shock. She kept nothing about her old self on her phone or laptop. So she wondered, How was Amina able to figure it out?
Amina seeing the look on her face, could guess what she was thinking. "I called you chubby, and you snapped as usual. That totally gave you away," Amina said.
Iyare's jaw dropped open when she heard her reply. "When did you..." Iyare was going to ask when the scene a moment ago flashed in her mind.
She sighs, realising she had just fallen into the trap of her friend. She had not guided agaist Amina because she did not think the girl could develop such an imagination.
