Chapter six

Serena's breath caught. Looking into his eyes, she could still vividly see the pain in his eyes when he receives the message that she was leaving.

It hurt her to have been so blind as not to see how much he cared for her. It was in death that she saw the sides to people, she never even knew existed.

Her best friend and husband betrayed her for money. But she was yet to figure out why Sophia did that to her. "This time around, I choose you," she said.

Damian frowned. He was clueless as to what she was going on about. He was not even sure what was happening. The girl before her had not spoken to him properly in a long time.

To her, he was a background declaration that was never important enough for her to greet or talk to. So it surprised him that she was the one to take the initiative of talking to him.

"What do you mean by that?" Damian inquired calmly.

"You will see," Serena added and excused herself. It was time to execute her plan. Her adopted sister crossed all the lines by toasting to her death.

Now it was time to remind her where her place was in the family. 'You won't even see this coming,' she thought and disappeared back to her room.

While on the way she could feel it in her bones that she was being watched. But she ignored it, that could be a problem for tomorrow. Today was the beginning of her revenge, the first step to getting everything that belonged to her enemies.

She dropped to the ground and started crying. Loads of tears streamed down her eyes, with her head in her hands she tried to mask the sound of her crying. But didn't do a good job at it, one of the maids passing by heard her tears and rushed to inform her mother.

Ivy came running to meet her daughter. After the fight in the morning, she had been very worried about Serena. She hurried into the room, her heart fell seeing the condition that her daughter was in. As a mother, she wished to comfort her daughter and take her pain away.

To show her that she loved her very much and would never wish for another in her place. "Sweetheart," she said in a pained voice and approached Serena.

"Please forget about what happened earlier. You do know that I love you right?"

Serena looked up to her mother, her tearful face made her look pitiful and sad. "I d..do know th..that you love me but y..you love Sophia more," Serena uttered in a shaky emotional voice.

"No, dear..."

"I can do this anymore mom. My heart just can't take it, it is enough," she let out interrupting her mother in what she was trying to say.

"Baby, I lo..."

"Did you even ask me once if I wanted to get married to Damian or did you just find him good enough for your favorite daughter?" she questioned her mother.

Ivy froze. She was not getting a chance to let in a word and the direction of the talk was confusing her.

"When the proposal came you gave it to her without even asking me," she started to say. "I tried to rebel thinking that my mother would understand why and correct her mistake but she can't seem to see past her adopted child," Serena added.

She got up from the ground creating distance between her and her mother. Her eyes stared into the distance with a devilish smile on her lips.

"I got a boyfriend to try and forget the crush I had on Damian but I could never forget him," she said feigning hurt in her voice. "I have tried but I can't seem to move on from Damian and I won't be able to see him get engaged and married to Sophia," she added picking up a sharp fruit knife from the table.

She brought the knife to her wrist and turned around to face her mother. "I love him, mom," she informed her mother.

Ivy's eyes widen with shock seeing Serena with the knife ready to slit her wrist. "Since you don't find me good enough for him, I will leave him for Sophia. Send him my regards," she said and moved her hand to cut her hand.

Ivy dashed with all her might towards her daughter and grabbed the knife before it dug into her skin. Her heart was racing in fear, she couldn't stand the thought of losing her daughter who only then returned to her.

She had no idea that Serena loved Damian and that she was suffering because she decided to get Damian and Sophia married.

"You should..."

"Why bother saving me when you can't give me my life. Damian is my breath, my heart, and soul, without him you might not be fast enough to save me next time," she uttered coldly.

Ivy froze, her hand that was wiping the blood from her daughter's hand shook. She truly was unable to handle hearing such words from her baby girl. Her child was talking about committing suicide and all for something that can be fixed.

"If you love Damian, then I will get you married to him," her mother spoke honestly. She was sure to speak with Damian and Sophia and try to convince them to agree.

"If you do that then I will believe that you truly love me, mom. Announce it before the cutting of the cake and get us engaged today," she requested. Her voice and actions seemed desperate. "I will not cut my birthday cake without a ring from him on my finger," she added.

Ivy found herself stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one hand was her biological child who was threatening to end her life because of a man. And on the other was her adopted child who was set to marry that every man.

Whichever child she chose to support would leave the other hurt. A heartbreak could be cured but if Serena committed suicide then, it would be irreversible.

"As you wish," she said.

Serena embraced her mother tightly. She knew that using her mother like that was wrong but it had to be done. She was also doing her a favor since the ungrateful brat would end up killing her child in the future if measures aren't taken to stop her.

'Your time in this house is limited Sophia. Just wait and see,' she thought.
