Chapter 44: The Big Bad Wolf

Michael’s POV

I stood in the corner of the room watching her brother sit there. He hadn’t said a word, he just sat by her bed and stared at her. I wanted to yell at him, tell him that this was a waste of time, but I couldn’t. I could hear my mother’s voice whispering to me that grief affects everyone differently.

“She’s not dead. There’s still a chance that she’ll wake up.”

The words were meant to be comforting but something in me wasn’t all too convinced. I was starting to feel like the words weren’t as helpful as they were supposed to be.

“I know she’s going to wake up. She promised me that she’d save me from them. Once I turn eighteen, I’d be able to leave, and she would be there.”

He hovered his hand over hers before taking it. Tears threatened to escape his eyes, but he held them in. He was trying to be strong, but I wasn’t sure who for.

“Havana never breaks a promise.”
