Chapter 40: The Resistance

“How do you know who I am? How do you know I am in opposition with Amun?” Emilia asked.

The vampire that had recognized her – who had introduced himself as Gunnar and was the leader of this group – guided her to his chair.

Gunnar was tall with a broad chest and shoulders – he had twinkling blue eyes and a messy blond beard and mustache. The sides of his head were shaved and he had a shock of long, blond hair at the top braided tightly against his scalp – he reminded Emilia of the Viking warriors she’d been raised around.

The table was round, so there was no ‘head’ of the table, but everyone else pulled away from her slightly and all angled themselves so they could look at her.

For the first time in her own kingdom, she felt like a true queen.

“Amun recruited me to be a general in his army because of my military experience. I was always there in the shadows, watching, listening,” Gunnar explained. “It didn’t take long for me to understand the nature of your relationship.”
