Chapter 49

The room was solemn. But there was a lightness that lingered in the air. The moment Cyrus was vanquished Carson and Sophie fell to the ground, as his magic was destroyed and along with it any spell he had cast. They ran to me. We stood hugging for, I’m not sure how long, just staring that the empty, now singed spot where Cyrus had previously been standing. Edgar approached us.

“Does this mean we’re free?’ he asked looking at us. He seemed docile, almost childlike.

“We?” I asked.

“Me and the others. The other witches.” I gestured to the same door Sophie had come out of.

“There are dozens of them down there.” Sophie pointed. “He has them locked up; they are all sick looking.” She whispered.

“Why was he keeping you here?” I asked Edgar. His was beginning to change. His face looked fuller, healthier.

“I don’t know. He promised us a new life, to teach us magic, and to grant us powers. But then he brought us here and trapped us inside.” He sighed.
