WELCOME BACK, DAVEL

It was like watching a curtain made of water. The water curtain kept moving in the direction of the wind, and every movement seemed to hypnotize the eyes like a pendulum being swayed.

The pitter-patter created by the rain also sounded like a melody that captivated her as she continued to stare at the window.

Her chin rested on the palm of her hand, and she looked like she was lost in her thoughts.

The black strands covered the side of her face, but she didn't bother wiping them off as she was in a daze while staring at the rain.

The wet window reflected her appearance a little. Long black hair, a pair of hazel eyes, and fair skin. She still looked young, but her parents did not think the same.

["You are almost thirty, Lycia. When are you going to consider marriage? More than a dozen men came to propose, but you turned them down. Do you think you can stay single for the rest of your life?"]

That was how her mother scolded her before she left her parents' house and headed to the hospital today. That wasn't the first time she'd been scolded by her parents, but she still felt annoyed about it.

"Do I need to get married?" She muttered. "People say that humans will fall in love, and then they will get married. But I've never felt love before, and I don't want to be with someone I don't love."

It was late at night, and the cold atmosphere added to the gloomy feeling in her heart. It was really quiet, and the silence was only broken by the sound of sirens.

The long-haired girl immediately got up from her chair when she heard the sound. It was like a habit to her, and the siren was like an alarm that would wake her up in the morning.

"I think it's an emergency! Prepare yourself in your position!" She instructed the others in the room.

She was Lycia Henderson, an emergency medicine doctor who worked at Hillsdale Hospital in Osland City. Being an emergency medicine doctor, she had to stay in the emergency room almost every day during her shift.

It was already midnight, and she was on standby along with the other doctors and nurses. And when the ambulance carrying the patient drove to the front of the emergency room, they got into their positions.

The sirens stopped sounding when the ambulance finally stopped in front of the emergency room, and the ambulance driver quickly opened the back door before pulling the gurney out of the white vehicle.

Two people also got out of the vehicle, and they looked panicked as they followed the gurney's movement toward the emergency room.

Arriving at the emergency room, Lycia received the patient before asking the two people who came with the patient, "What happened to him?"

Lying on the bed was a young man. He was tall, his hair was short and white, and his skin was as clean as porcelain. Even if the man closed his eyes, one would be able to tell that the man was handsome.

"My son... my son has heart disease, and I think he just had a heart attack. Please save him, doctor!" The woman who appeared to be the patient's mother answered Lycia's question.

After hearing the woman's answer, Lycia immediately performed a physical examination on the man as usual.

However, she found something odd with the unconscious patient before turning to one of the nurses.

"Give the patient IV fluids and prepare an ECG too," she ordered the nurse.

The two people who appeared to be the patient's parents looked panicked when they heard the doctor's instructions.

"What happened to our son, doctor?" It was the man who was questioning Lycia now.

"You needn't worry, sir," Lycia replied. "When I did a physical examination on the patient, I didn't find anything wrong with him. However, we still have to observe the patient to make sure that he is safe now."

The doctor only gave positive answers to the parents, but the parents looked doubtful.

"Are you sure, doctor? My son had pain around his chest earlier, and he even said that he wouldn't be able to survive. Please tell me the truth, doctor. You don't have to lie to me if my son is in critical condition."

It was the mother who spoke to her again, and Lycia reflectively raised her eyebrows when she heard the mother's statement. She had examined the patient carefully, and she had not found anything wrong with the patient.

"To be sure, we'll have to wait for the nurse to perform an ECG on the patient, madame," Lycia tried to explain carefully. "And just because your son has heart disease doesn't mean he's had a heart attack earlier. Maybe he just has chest pain, but it's not always a heart attack."

Lycia's experience was not only a year or two, and she was sure her patient was now safe. She could understand if the patient's parents were scared, but she was relieved when the patient's father looked more relaxed now.

However, she flinched slightly when the mother of the patient suddenly grabbed her hands and squeezed them lightly.

"Thank you very much, doctor," the mother spoke again. "I think you brought good luck to my son. He was still in pain when we were in the ambulance, but after we entered the emergency room, his condition returned to normal. It must be because of you, doctor."

Lycia wasn't someone who believed in superstitions or anything like that, and she felt strange when she heard the woman's words.

But, before she could answer the woman, she could hear a weak voice coming from her side, and when she turned her head, she could see the patient moving slightly before the pair of eyes slowly opened.

The next thing she saw was a pair of blue eyes that resembled the blue sky, but then her body was pushed aside by the woman as the woman suddenly moved closer to the patient.

Weeping in happiness, the woman whispered to her son, "Welcome back, Davel."
