Chapter 44: Trust

Chris POV:

Chris ran his hands through his hair as he made his way back to his home. The training today exhausted Chris.

He worried about the pack. Most of the volunteers had only run once, making them Asa’s age. It seemed young to lay their lives on the line for something so silly. Chris wanted to fight Len one on one, to avoid hurting those he cared about.

But leaders rarely fought their own battles. Instead they hid behind the young and impressionable like cowards.

Chris shook his head, wanting to get the cynical thoughts out of his mind. He could do nothing about the war now, just help others prepare for it.

He breathed in deeply as he steeped into his land, the sweet lilac scent drifting toward him. At least Asa could assuage his doubts and fears. He frowned as he recognized another scent.

Whiskey.

Chris tore into a sprint, huffing toward his home.

He thought that his previous warning scared Jacob off.
