Grandmother is by my side when we break through the basement and out into the light of day. We both blink a little, struggling to adjust. The sun isn’t too high in the sky so it must be around noon or later.
“It’s a lovely campus, isn’t it?” Grandmother asks as we make our way down the path towards a large building. I look back and see only a cellar door and nothing surrounding it. There must be another entrance to the basement in other buildings too but they chose to take me out the dramatic way. “This is where your mother grew up, and of course, where you were conceived. Would you like to visit your mother?”
“Yes,” I respond immediately, anxious to see her again. I wonder if she slept at all or if she was up all night worrying just like I was.
