The Mystery

Sophie came downstairs after freshening up only to be welcomed by James who already had breakfast ready.

"Wow, scrambled eggs. My favorite." She squealed as she walked to take her seat at the dining table. "Thanks, you," She smiled at him and picked up her fork and knife.

"Anything for you, baby girl" James wiggled his brows at her and Sophie's cheerful face dimmed. "Ugh James, stop it, we're not in a relationship."

"But we could be if you give me a chance," He shrugged with a sheepish smile on his face and Sophie took a deep breath, "James, I don't wa-" She was yet to finish her words when the sudden ring of her phone interrupted her.

"Hello."

[Philadelphia Town Hospital, is this Miss Sophie Albert?]

"Yes, it is. Is everything OK? "

[Please come to the hospital right now, there is an emergency]

"What do you mean?" A bit confused, Sophie inquired.

[Miss, this is urgent. please come to hospital. We'll explain more, okay]

"Okay...am on my way." She replied a bit reluctantly before cutting the call.

"What's going on, Sophie?" James, who noticed the change of expression on her face asked.

"I don't know, a call from the hospital just cane and I was asked to come there regarding an urgent matter." She glanced at James and clarified.

"Hmm...well let's go and find out what it is. We'll use my uncle's car."

.....

On arriving at the hospital, they approached a nearby doctor and Sophie proceeded to introduce herself. "Hello sir, I'm Sophie. I got a call that-"

"Aah...Miss Sophie," the doctor added. "Your mother was brought here this morning. We did all we could, but we couldn't..."

"You couldn't what?" She asked with her brow crinkledin confusion.

Please understand, Miss Sophie, that we did everything we could to save your mother; please relax."

"Can you tell me where she is?!?" "I need to see her right now!" Her breathing grew very heavy as she turned to the doctor.

"Miss I don't think you're in the right frame of mind to see her."

"I demand to see my mother!" As tears streamed down her cheeks.

"All right, she's in room 7b."

"Thank you, doctor," James replied as he dragged Sophie to the Emergency Room.

She inhaled deeply and pushed open the door. Her gaze was drawn to the table, which was occupied by a person covered in white clothing. Sophie reached out her trembling hands and carefully yanked the garments down, revealing the corpse's face.

Her eyes welled up with tears as her knees gave way and she collapsed to the ground. Her shaking hands caressed her mother's face, whispering, "mo...mother."

Sophie grabbed her hand hard and scowled at her mother, who was no longer alive. "You said you wouldn't abandon me, and you were the only one I had left; how did you get to Transylvania?"

"Sophie, what's that on her neck?" James said as he examined the lifeless body.

The two gasped in surprise as they examined it more attentively. Sophie murmured, "Those are tooth marks." She couldn't believe her eyes. "The only person I had in this world was taken by a vampire!" They fucking took my mother!" Sophie cried while clutching her mother's hands.

"I'm so sorry Sophie. This is both astonishing and unbelievable at the same time. I mean, all of this vampire thing happened so fast," James said as his phone rang.

"Good day, boss,"

[James What is the status of the case? Sophie isn't picking up]

"As far as that goes, we haven't begun our investigations yet."

[What! Why?]

For a little period, James paused. "Sophie's mother has passed away. Right now, we're at the hospital.

[OH... My apologies. Please accept my sympathy for her loss. Look after her.]

"All right, boss"

Sophie and James returned to the house later that evening. "Do you want to discuss, Sophie?" James inquired, concerned.

"No, I just need some alone time," she said as she walked to her room and shut the door behind her.
