Seen and unseen

"I have met the King a few times with my seniors but never actually met his entire family. So, I am not familiar with any of them." Deimos was bluffing and Selene had no idea.

She wondered if that's the reason why he didn't recognize her as Princess. It was more the reason for her to be relieved as she doesn't have to worry about her identity, she could easily pretend to be anyone.

"The King is a generous man and so are his children." She replied.

"You speak so highly of the royal family." He pointed out. Deimos probably couldn't see someone speak so highly about the family who took his ancestral land and pride from his pack and nation.

"Of course. he is the King, protecting us from those monsters!" She spoke unconsciously. "And shouldn't you too respect the King since you're serving him?" She mocked him for his question, unaware that he wasn't entertained.

"I am serving the King, but I am free to decide who is worthy of my respect." He gritted his teeth as he said.

"And why do you think the King doesn't deserve your respect?"

"It's going to be a long story and we're already running out of time." He diverted the attention back to the current situation, but Selene wondered how a man serving the King as a spy for years would have any feelings other than respect for him.

"If you tell me your reason to hate the King then I'll tell you my reason for fleeing away from the Kingdom." She proposed.

There was a smile on his lips as soon as he listened her words. He couldn't believe she would show any curiosity to his thoughts. He stopped in his tracks and turned back. With the sudden abrupt Selene ran into him and bumped her head on his chest. Only then she realized he had stopped moving.

"Why would you stop so suddenly?" She asked taking a step back and freeing herself from his hand that she's been holding all this time to walk through the dark.

"I just wondered since when you started taking an interest in me?"

Even in the dark, Deimos could see properly with the help of his night vision. He noticed the frown on Selene's face and laughed internally at that.

"What kind of question is that? I only asked you because I fee it odd that a man serving the King hates him." She clarified.

Deimos suppressed his laughter and said, "You're interested in listening to my thoughts, about why I disrespect the King and his family, aren't you?"

"I think I made myself very clear from the beginning that I was only interested in knowing the reason how a man can serve the King and disrespect him at the same time."

Deimos smirked as he noticed a new opening, "I don't see how one is different from another."

Selene pouted at that and he laughed as she did.

"There are always two sides to a story, one that is visible to the naked eyes and other that can only be understood and felt by the heart. You are only aware of the things that you can see and hear." He stated with a displeasing tone.

"It doesn't make any sense to me." She replied honestly.

"Tell me what do you think of werewolves?" He asked, wondering what could her reply be.

"They kill people and rob them of families. In my eyes they are just wild animals who need to be tamed by inflicting torture." She answered exactly the same words she had heard her elders say about the wolves.

Deimos expected nothing less from her. It irked him to hear such displeasing words about his people but she belonged to the hunter kingdom and of course they would teach such things to them.

Keeping his cool, he said, "That's what you know, that's what you have heard all your life but it isn't exactly true. The werewolves have lost a lot as well, but nobody knows of their pain and nobody would consider it."

"Oh my god, I can't believe the amount of brainwashing those monsters have done. How can you forget whose side you're on? Don't forget you a spy for the hunters not the wolves." Selene joked, unbeknownst of the fact that she was talking to the alpha of Crimsoncrest pack, the ones his father was at war with.

Deimos didn't speak a word but balled his fists and gritted his teeth to keep his rage from taking over his senses. If this was someone else, he would have torn their head off but since he knew nothing about this girl, he decided to let it go. It was better to keep her in dark than to shed light on his life.

Turning away, he started walking again and Selene followed.

"You still haven't told me why you were here?" He reminded.

Selene was hesitant to tell a total stranger about it but she went on anyway, "Today at the ball, my father announced that I'll be marrying his friend's son. It was a shock to me and I couldn't bear with it. So, the only thing that felt right was running away from there."
