Chapter 20: Sometimes it Ends

I heard a far-off buzzing in the distance—something pulling me from my sleep. Immediately, I decided that whatever was making that sound needed to be destroyed.

Groggily, I felt around on my mattress, searching for the thing that was buzzing in my ear, under my pillow. My room was still dark. The sun hadn’t even risen yet and someone was calling me?

Whoever it was…

I grabbed my phone and threw it on the floor. The buzzing didn’t stop. Instead, it got more persistent as the device buzzed against hardwood instead of my mattress.

“Why?” I whined.

I threw my blankets off and rolled out of bed, hardly catching myself before I went down on a knee and grabbed the phone. I didn’t even look at who was calling.

“You better have a good f*cking reason for calling me so early!” I snapped at whoever was on the other line.

“Is another body a good enough reason?” Captain Carson asked sternly.

“Captain Carson,” I said jumping to my feet. “Where’s the crime scene?”
