NORI'S POV
I dart in, grab Milo, and get him out of there. I take him through the tunnels and into the razed city. I run for a while, speeding through the remnants of roads and over new plant growth growing in the cracks between concrete monoliths leaning drunkenly against each other. At the very edge of the city, I set Milo’s wasted body on a sturdy hunk of drywall, shaken out of a building.
Although I want to sit beside him, enjoy the very sight of him, I won’t do that. We have to discuss what comes next. I have to give him the option to go back, to admit this was a foolish request made by a desperate man.
“I can’t believe you’re here,” he says.
Then he adds, “I can’t believe I’m here either. I never thought I’d see the moon again.”
