43. War

Tanya POV

My feet crunched on the dried leaves, the sound of crickets and night insects chipping in the air. The night was chilly and the lack of moonlight made it difficult to see through the darkness.

It was a blessing, however, as it kept our forms hidden. Dressed in all black, we blended into the night, the unmoving trees standing guard.

My breath fogged before me as I trudged farther into the woods. The lack of a flashlight made it harder for me to discern my surroundings as it was stated the bright light beam could be spotted from afar at such a time.

Dipping my fingers into the right pocket of my black sweatpants, I retrieved my phone and turned on the light. A hiss into my earpiece declared its disapproval and so I quickly lowered the strength to the barest minimum.

"You never listen," Daniel murmured in my ear and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
