As she slept in his arms a smile was on her lips. She did not care how much she had cried already all she knew was that she was safe in his arms.
She couldn't remember the last time she had a good birthday. All her years in the orphanage were bad. She could remember being bullied and wondered what she had done wrong
She couldn't stop the tears that started flowing down her face. She stood out soaking Vincenzo's shirt but he did not care he just kept caressing her face hoping the pain would go away.
That was not how it worked with pain though the scars always remained.
"Are you okay ?", he asked as he pulled Anna close to her.
"I don't know ", she said as she snuggled him.
How could she tell him that this was the best birthday she had in l the years that she had been alive? How could she tell him that he was the only person who had bothered to remember that it was her birthday?
It had never bothered her before that she didn't have friends. She had been okay having no one but now it was hurting.
She had never felt so alone as she did at that moment.
No one had called her to wish her a happy birthday but she couldn't blame them all she did was push people away.
She had thought that when she joined school then maybe she was going to have friends. It was the opposite of what had happened.
News of who she was had spread so fast and she knew no one would want to be her friend. If anyone did it would probably be because they wanted her to do something for them.
It irritated her that being married to Vincenzo had stolen that from her.
"How was school ?", he asked her.
She was a little shocked he had asked but with a smile on her face, she went in explaining how things had been omitting when she was told she would make an amazing housewife.
"Friends aren't that important in someone's life ", he told her as he shrugged his shoulders.
She knew that was a lie. In times when she needed someone to talk to there was no one and it was probably one of the worst things ever.
She couldn't ask anyone for advice all she relied on was herself.
"I don't think that's true, you need someone to talk to once in a while ", she said to him as she turned to look at him.
She could see his face clearly as the light of the moon from the window illuminated his face.
For a moment she had forgotten how good-looking he was. The way his mouth creased at the corner every time he was smiling made her smile too.
"Not everyone who is there for you is your friend. Sometimes both of you have something that the other person wants. You just can't be friends with someone like that ", he said as he thought hard.
He knew he was right. Friendships were about what you could do for the other person and he would rather have none than call someone a friend when he was not.
Anna didn't know what to say to that because it was not like she had any friends. Right, then she remembered Dylan.
Was he her friend?
Did they both have something the other wanted?
She knew why she always went to his house. She was lonely and needed company. He understood her and never judged her for what she felt.
She knew he wasn't her friend. You could never be friends with someone you loved.
He was utterly in love with her he couldn't even help it anymore. Every time he saw her it was like his heart would stop beating for a second to get used to her presence around him.
Every time she cried all he wanted to do was take her in his arms and take all the pain away. She didn't deserve to cry she was meant to be happy all the time.
When she was away his days were full and all he wanted was to see her. He lit up his life, he could never have imagined someone could do that.
She could never feel it. That way about him though. She was in love with the wrong man.
A man who didn't bring happiness to her life but sadness. A man who didn't care if she smiled or not.
Vincenzo's heart did not stop beating or be filled with excitement every time he saw her. She was just like every other woman he had met before.
To him, there was nothing special about Anna. He couldn't adore her the way she wanted to be adored and somehow her stupid heart did not want to let go.
She knew that he could never give her what she wanted but still stuck around. Sue deserved to be happy but for some reason had tied her happiness to one person who couldn't even give it to her.
The more she looked at him the more she was filled with sadness.
He could never be hers.
He didn't think that she was the best thing to ever happen to him. When he was having a bad day she was not the first thought that came to his mind.
If anything she never came to his mind at all. She was a stranger in his heart. Had he ever even loved someone
She wondered what it would take for him to feel the way she feels about him. A lifetime?
She wanted to ask him if he had ever loved Brianna. Had she made him happy? Were there days when he could think of her and sole about the thought or they were all just the same to him?
She knew that it would be a mistake. She didn't want to argue all she wanted was to smile and sleep and wait for tomorrow so that her life could be miserable all over again.
