Warning bells

"Hello! Hello!! David! Can you hear me? Is Nora with you? This girl has left her phone here after dropping it in the backyard, and Myron has also not come home since the morning. You know my condition, otherwise I would have gone to search for both of them. Usually, I don't particularly believe in bad omens; but I am also getting scared now. It has been too long since both of them left, and I haven't heard from either of them till now, even once. Thank God you called, because I was also stuck in the same dilemma of whether I should call you, or Louis. I was bracing myself because Louis would have instantly resorted to making fun of me, by saying that I am being paranoid."

The moment Valerie saw her phone screen light up, she received the call without any delay and said all the things going on inside her mind, in one go.

She had not forgotten that she was talking to an Alpha who was also going to be the King, but right now, she was not speaking like a lower rank wolf would speak to her Alpha, rather she was talking to him with the authority she held as the guardian figure of Nora.

And above all the factors, all she was caring and worried about at that point of time, was the same subject - Nora, and only Nora. From Myron's end, she could still hold out hope that he had gotten stuck in some extra tasks in the preparation for the wedding or regarding the house, because of which he had been unable to get back to her. But she had never been so worried over Nora, who had simply never given her a reason to be concerned over her safety. She had always returned home on time, or had at least kept her informed. But today, not only had she left the house without any regard for her safety, but had also left her bow and arrows back there. After Valerie had noticed the phone Nora had unintentionally left behind, the probability that Nora was in some kind of difficulty had strengthened in her mind. However, she was not sure what kind of trouble she might have run into, and she really did not want to manifest any of the dreadful situations into reality. This was why she had forced herself to not think about anything and was just sitting in the chair present in her room, while fighting against her mind to have it be blank and completely devoid of thoughts. She was willing herself into a state of calm such that all the evil thoughts emerging in her mind could finally stop impacting her - the last thing she wanted was to hurt herself by overthinking.

Valerie's mind was pushing her towards the ledger sheet of right and wrong over and over again, so that she could balance out all the thoughts, emotions and feelings she had gone through during the day. And when she did not hear any reply from David even after a few minutes, her brain became curious once again, although her curiosity was diverted onto a completely a different topic now. She had somehow ended up on the conclusion that David might have gotten offended by her casual tone, and the first thing she was supposed to do in this case, was to apologise to him.

Carefully choosing the words for her apology, she spoke up again;

"Alpha! Am I audible to you? I am sorry if I have gotten over- excited and spoken to you too casually as a result. Actually, Nora has been living with us for so long now that I have developed a habit of treating her as a little sister of mine. Since she has not contacted me at all today, I was honestly a little mad at her. But mostly, it was all due to my concerns, and I wasn't able to find any medium to establish a connection with her.

And then your call was just like the first ray of moonlight in the darkest sky of the night, which gave a boost to my expectations of her of her being safe and sound and being with you. However, I still have no justification for my behaviour towards you, and I am highly apologetic if I have offended you in any capacity."

Valerie finished her statement in all sincerity, only to hear a sound that could be either a hic or sob from the other end. David finally managed to utter the following words after a long pause ;

"Valerie, listen carefully. Do you know where Myron is, or could be? Has he given you any idea regarding his whereabouts at this time or where he was heading to, before leaving in the morning?"

This question was like a strong gust of wind that set off too many warning bells inside Valerie's mind. Till now, she had been worried about Nora's safety, but she was suddenly much more concerned about Myron. By some miracle, her heart had continued to function after missing a beat, and she found a few words she could scrape together to form a sentence that could convey even a fraction of the chaos raging in her heart and mind.

"What happened Alpha, is there some bad news? Is… is Myron oka-"

"Valerie… Nora is in the ICU, and she has been repeating his name. So tell me if you have any clue regarding where he could be?"

David placed another question in front of Valerie, while thinking that he was ready to give away everything he had under his name, just to know the whereabouts of Myron. Myron, a lower wolf who was the found brother of the love of his life, but he wasn't able to do anything to lessen her misery. And this was when he recalled one of their earlier encounters, as her voice echoed in his ears ;

"Oh, really! Then I pray that you would have to encounter a day when you feel extremely guilty because of being a Prince, and beg to be a commoner. Because the weight of the sacrifices a crown always demands is only understandable by those who have a heart! Not someone like you, who has a stone fixed at the place of that delicate organ."
